Autumn – you beautiful season you
As you can probably recall; painting and sanding our pint-sized home consumed us over Easter, so this Sunday gone, we made a conscious effort to escape the tools and pestilential fumes.
Aaah the energising, fresh air of the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens. Lungs – you’re welcome!
Only half an hour drive, after weaving the slow Sunday driver traffic, up the M1, we exited the National Highway approaching the Crafers interchange and began to eyeball the colour carbohydrate synthesis of plant leaf pigment; that’s the bright Autumn leaf colour change for the less scientifically minded folk.
Considering it was a cool, cloudy Autumn day, the packed carpark indicated that visitors were not deterred and neither were we.
Positioned on 97 hectares on the eastern hillside of Mount Lofty in the Adelaide Hills, this public garden is one of the most spectacular in South Australia.
As we made our way down the path from the Upper carpark, the scenic Piccadilly Valley came into view. We were soon sidetracked from the view by the striking colour mass display by mostly cool temperate plants. It was still quite moist amongst the undergrowth from the recent rain and we began to do some ‘fungus finding’ – no Smurfs to report of. The instantly recognisable laugh of a Kookaburra echoed from the treetops above.
We continued to enjoy the diversity of native and collection plants as we roved down to the lower section of the gardens. Chad and I loved playing ‘spot the Autumn colour’ and so did our camera lens:
What do you reckon; head back up to Mount Lofty Gardens when the sun comes out?
We will keep you posted!
